What is your earliest art memory?

I was 6 years old, and my first grade teacher Mrs. Juchli, brought rental art prints from the Edmonton Art Gallery for us to see.  The prints were from paintings by the Group of Seven, some of the first Canadian artists to actually paint Canada, their own landscape.  I was fascinated by the different forms the paint could take, that Lawren Harris’ Mount Lefroy embodied smoothness, while Tom Thomson’s trees were alive with leaves of dabbed paint.  This was a new sensation, this visual language reaching in through my eyes and into my heart.

What is your first memory of encountering art?

Not my earliest…well at this very moment it is my earliest…but I remember fondly going to the Cincinnati Art Museum with my dad..and being rather well behaved! Also going to listen to the Cincy Orchestra practice in the summertime for free!

That’s cool you went with your Dad! My memories of the Edmonton Art Museum revolve around being able to take the bus and go by myself at age 14 or 15–very exciting!

It was with my father because he is an artist. I was probably 5 and he was painting a portait of a girl who lived in our neighborhood. I have been blessed to receive the gift of art also.:)
